You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to spruce up your home at the start of each season. Budget-friendly DIYs and inexpensive pieces can look just as good as the pricier decor, especially when you know how to arrange them.

If you’re ready to decorate your home for fall or Halloween, we’ve rounded up twelve of the best Dollar Tree decorating ideas from TikTokers.

Make a Beautiful Grouping of Dollar Tree Pumpkins

Make a Beautiful Grouping of Dollar Tree Pumpkins

Small faux pumpkins can cost as much as $10 at other stores, but Dollar Tree offers a wide selection at only $1.25/piece. The Crafted Studio Co shares her Dollar Tree haul, which includes plastic and velvet-covered pumpkins in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Her tip for making small pumpkin groupings look good? Vary the sizes, shapes, textures, and colors.

Create an Elegant Floating Candle

Create an Elegant Floating Candle

Dollar Tree sells everything you need to create floating candles, and you can customize the look to your preferences. Aryam6582 fills two glass cups with fall harvest decor before adding water and a floating tea light candle.

If you’d rather go for a Halloween look, swap the mini fall decor for plastic skeletons or jack-o-lanterns.

Gift a Dollar Tree Boo Basket

Gift a Dollar Tree Boo Basket

Aside from only decorating, Dollar Tree’s fall merchandise makes for an easy-to-put-together boo-basket that won’t break the bank. Paige Constanino tailors her basket for an adult, but you can also make cheap baskets for your kids.

To make a nice-looking gift basket, choose a container, fill it with fall-colored paper grass, and load it up with the recipient’s favorite things.

Assemble the Cutest Hurricane Vase

Assemble the Cutest Hurricane Vase

Hurricane vases can be expensive, but if you follow the DIY Mommy’s tutorial, you can assemble one with $1.25 products. Start with your hurricane vase, and then add a set of battery-operated string lights. Layer in the lights with Halloween or fall-related accent pieces.

Place your hurricane vase on your nightstand or as part of your dining table’s centerpiece for an autumnal glow.

DIY a Fall Lantern with Dollar Tree Supplies

Forget expensive lanterns. This tutorial from Aryam6582 will walk you through making your own with only a few simple products and a hot glue gun. You can paint or keep the wood bare and customize the accents to fit your fall decor.

Transform a Styrofoam Pumpkin

Transform a Styrofoam Pumpkin

It’s no secret — some of the items at the dollar store can look a little cheap. But, with creativity and minimal DIY skills, you can transform a cheap pumpkin into a high-end-looking decor piece.

If you want designer-looking pumpkins for your shelves or centerpiece, The Crafted Studio Co. shares how to wrap one to give it that fuzzy, full look.

Make a Faux Tree with a Dollar Tree Plunger

Make a Faux Tree with a Dollar Tree Plunger

Need tall decor to fill in an awkward space? Create a tree out of a plunger, like TikToker HomeTalk. To make the tree, hot glue your faux floral stems to the top of the plunger. Wrap the plunger in white tape and draw on black lines to imitate the look of Birch. Finally, use the plunger to suction your tree in place and cover the base with a cloth.

Deck Out Your Porch with a DIY Fall Sign

Deck Out Your Porch with a DIY Fall Sign

Swapping out porch signs for the season can get expensive. If you like changing the look yearly, you’re better off DIYing your own.

Mwhal89_ creates an autumn sign with a wooden paintable pumpkin as the accent. She uses an old board as the base and then layers on the pumpkin, florals, and a stencil for a one-of-a-kind design.

Create Stacked Pumpkins

https://www.tiktok.com/@evebydesigns1/video/7273156455962971438?q=dollar%20tree%20fall%20hacks&t=1728308018073

Stacked pumpkins are ideal when you need to fill in a vertical space. Eve by Designs arranges Dollar Tree pumpkins for this effect. However, instead of leaving them as is, acrylic paint gives them a custom look.

The nice thing about this idea is you can paint the pumpkins any color to coordinate with the rest of your room.

Assemble Garland from Dollar Tree Fall Florals

Assemble Garland from Dollar Tree Fall Florals

Skip the expensive Pottery Barn garland and grab Dollar Tree pool noodles, ribbon, and florals for a full-looking mantle garland.

Jenny Brown Chaplin cuts her pool noodles to size and positions them on her mantle. Then, she adds florals, faux pumpkins, and other fall decor with dowel rods and ribbon.

Transform Your Hand Soap Dispenser with a Glass Pumpkin Jar

Transform Your Hand Soap Dispenser with a Glass Pumpkin Jar

The next time you’re at the dollar store, look for a glass pumpkin with a metal, mason jar type of lid. Liz Fenwick DIY shows how easy it is to transform one of these jars into a high-end-looking soap dispenser.

You only need to poke a hole in the metal lid big enough to fit the soap dispenser from your plastic bottle. (Cut down the end to size if necessary.) Then, dump your hand soap into the jar.

DIY a Skeleton Candle

DIY a Skeleton Candle

Spooky candles are easy to make, thanks to this Dollar Tree hack from Alyshia Faith. She purchased a ceramic bowl, two mini skeletons, and three tall candles to complete this DIY. After melting the candles, she positioned the wicks in the ceramic bowl, dumped the candle wax in, and added the skeletons before letting the wax reharden.

Limewash has gained a popular following in recent years with both professional designers and home enthusiasts alike. It is celebrated for its natural and timeless aesthetic, and it provides a one-of-a-kind way to enhance and soften the appearance of hard surfaces such as brick or stone.

Bedroom Limewash Paint

Its application enhances a variety of interior and exterior spaces with an understated elegance that blends seamlessly with various architectural styles while creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. As a versatile and eco-friendly option, limewash appeals to everyone seeking both beautiful and sustainable solutions in their lives.

What is Limewash?

Limewash Paint Texture

Limewash is a type of paint or whitewash that contains lime (calcium hydroxide), water, and, in some cases, natural pigment for color. Limewash has been used for centuries to change the color of a surface, particularly on the exterior of historic and traditional buildings.

Limewash is distinguished by its matte, chalky finish, which adds color, depth, and texture to surfaces. Unlike traditional paint, limewash allows the exterior surface to breathe, which prevents moisture buildup. This feature protects the integrity of the material beneath the limewash, allowing it to remain strong and durable over time. It is ideal for moist climates because it naturally prohibits the growth of bacteria that can form mold. Limewash has no VOCs or odor and is also UV resistant.

Types of Limewash

There are several different types of limewash, each with its own unique properties and applications. Limewash is classified primarily according to its composition and intended use.

  • Traditional Limewash: This limewash is composed of lime and water. Traditional limewash is naturally white and is preferred for historic applications due to its authentic look and breathability. It is appropriate for both indoor and outdoor applications.
  • Modern Limewash: The modern limewash variation often includes additional additives and binders to improve its adhesion. It still has an authentic appearance, but it is easier to apply and more weather-resistant.
  • Colored Limewash: This is a traditional limewash with natural pigment added. These natural pigments include ochre, yellow iron oxide, red ochre, burnt sienna, and natural sienna. The colors added to limewash increase design flexibility while maintaining the natural, matte appearance of traditional limewash.
  • Premixed Limewash: Premixed limewash, also known as ready-mixed limewash, is quick and easy to use, making it suitable for both professionals and DIYers. Unlike standard limewash, which is available in powder form, this mixture already contains water. The proper ratio of lime, water, and natural pigments ensures consistent quality and ease of application.
  • Textured Limewash: This limewash contains aggregates or additives in the mixture that give the finished surface a more pronounced texture. It is used to create a rustic look or to replicate the appearance of traditional plaster.
  • Acrylic-Modified Limewash: This type of limewash contains acrylic modifiers, which improve the durability and flexibility of the finish. These additives make limewash more suitable for high-traffic and weather-prone areas by combining the appearance of traditional limewash with the durability of modern paint.

Uses for Limewash

Limewash can be applied to a variety of surfaces, both indoors and outdoors. Its versatility and breathability make it suitable for a wide range of applications. Limewash adheres well to porous surfaces even without a primer, but a primer may be required for better adherence to non-porous surfaces.

  • Exterior Walls: Limewash is ideal for exterior brick, stone, and stucco walls. It gives them a soft, matte-like texture and allows them to breathe, preventing water from becoming trapped beneath the surface and eroding their structure.
  • Interior Walls: Limewash can be used on plaster and drywall walls that have been painted or left bare. Limewash is also effective on stone and brick interior walls. The limewash adds texture, interest, and a traditional look.
  • Fireplace and Chimney: Limewash is ideal for heat-resistant surfaces such as fireplaces and chimneys. It can also be used to update the look of an outdated brick or stone fireplace.
  • Wood: Limewash can be applied to a variety of wood items, including beams, paneling, and furniture, to create an aged and rustic look.
  • Garden and Landscape Features: Limewash is ideal for creating a cohesive and natural appearance on outdoor garden elements, such as walls, containers, statuary, and fences.

Tips for Applying Limewash

Limewash Aplication

You apply limewash in the same way you would paint, but the application will vary depending on your surface. Gather all of your supplies, including a limewash brush, primer (depending on the surface), and limewash. A primer will always be used on non-porous surfaces where limewash may not adhere well.

Apply the limewash in thin layers with horizontal, vertical, or diagonal strokes, then work it in with a circular motion. Begin by working in a small area and progressing to larger areas as you complete them. Be aware of drips and sagging in the limewash areas you have painted, and fix them as you go. The number of layers used determines the opacity of the limewash covering.

Limewash Finish Options

Limewash offers a variety of finishes, each with its own unique aesthetic and texture. The type of finish achieved depends on factors such as the application technique, the number of coats, and the type of surface being treated. Here are some common finishes that can be achieved with limewash:

Smooth Finish

Smooth Finish
ROMABIO

A smooth finish is achieved by applying limewash in thin layers until the surface is smooth and opaque. This finish has a subtle texture and a soft, matte appearance that is ideal for creating a clean, modern surface.

Textured Finish

Louise Lakier

A textured finish is achieved by using a thicker limewash or one with added aggregates. This results in a surface with a more noticeable texture, giving it an aged or historic appearance.

Brushed Finish

A brushed finish can be achieved by applying thick limewash and creating visible brushstrokes in the medium. This adds texture and depth to the limewash while also creating a sense of movement.

Washed Finish

Washed Finish
Houzz

A washed finish is a technique that gives surfaces a soft, weathered appearance with subtle color and texture variations. Depending on the opacity desired, this finish can be achieved by applying diluted limewash or a single layer.

Layered Finished

Color Atelier Paint & Plaster

Layered finishes are achieved by applying multiple layers of limewash in different colors. Each layer is partially visible through the other layers, adding depth and richness to the surface color.

Distressed Finish

Struttura

A distressed finish is created by lightly sanding or scrubbing sections after the limewash has dried. This exposes the underlying material, giving the surface a worn or distressed appearance.

Limewash vs Paint

Limewash vs Paint
Nash Baker Architects

Limewash and paint are both suitable for covering walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. They both have advantages and disadvantages, so deciding which coating to use is a matter of personal preference, lifestyle, and surface.

Limewash is especially effective on exterior surfaces made of brick and stone because it sinks into the porous surfaces and allows them to breathe. Paint coats and protects surfaces such as wood, but it also acts as a vapor barrier, trapping moisture inside porous materials such as brick and stone, causing them to disintegrate over time. Limewash works well in moisture-prone areas due to its natural antibacterial and antifungal properties. Limewash, unlike paint, weathers gracefully and can be reapplied without requiring extensive surface preparation. In short, limewash works better on exterior brick and stone, while paint is best for protecting exterior wood.

The choice between limestone and paint for interior spaces is largely a matter of personal preference and lifestyle. Limestone creates an interesting depth and texture for walls. It is also an eco-friendly option, as it emits no VOCs and improves air quality. Limewash is less durable than paint because it is prone to washing away, which can be a problem in high traffic areas, and the color options are limited. Paint is highly durable for interior surfaces and comes in a wide range of colors and finishes.

Gardening sheds are one of those places that always appear disorganized. This not only makes entering the space unpleasant, but also makes it more difficult to complete the tasks at hand. Organizing your garden shed can make it more functional and enjoyable, as well as increase the efficiency of gardening tasks.

Shed organizations 1024x683

Key strategies include categorizing items, allowing yourself enough counterspace to work, and making the best use of available space. This careful organization of the garden shed not only increases productivity, but it also extends the life of your tools and materials, keeping them in top condition.

Ideas for Organizing a Garden Shed

Putting your garden shed in order can be a fulfilling process, but it can also be a creative one as you work with the space you have to both optimize the storage and make it an inspiring place to work.

Begin by Decluttering

All kinds of things accumulate in the garden shed over time, so the first and most important step in organizing your garden shed is to remove everything that does not belong.

Start by emptying the shed and carefully sorting through each item. This process will allow you to assess what you actually use, eliminating broken, duplicated, or unnecessary items. Starting with a clean slate allows you to better evaluate your layout and needs, as well as determine which organizational options will work best for the space.

Install Freestanding or Stationary Shelving

Fitting your storage shed with shelving units is an essential step toward effectively organizing the space. Shelves are useful for storing small items, such as pots and tools, keeping them off the floor and easily accessible.

Consider adjustable shelving units or shelf designs, which allow you to change the height based on the size of the items on each shelf. Using high-quality shelves or shelving material will prevent them from bending or sagging under heavy weights. Choose the type of shelves that best suit your space and layout. Shelves can be built-in or freestanding, depending on your shed design.

Pegboards/Vertical Storage

Pegboards/Vertical Storage

Pegboards are an effective way to maximize vertical wall storage in your shed, making the most of the available space. Pegboards or wall-mounted brackets allow you to hang tools like trowels and trimmers, so they are always accessible and easy to put away. This also frees up valuable floor space and keeps tools from getting in your way while working.

Pegboards and hooks are adaptable to any space and layout, allowing you to make them whatever size you require for the tools you need to hang or use the most.

Tool Racks

Tool Racks
Backyard Buildings

Tool racks or hooks are an excellent way to vertically store long-handled tools. Hanging these tools saves valuable floor space and keeps them from piling up in the corner of the shed. This ensures that they are not damaged or bent and are always easily accessible.

Storage Bins

Use clear or labeled storage bins for small items like seed packets, gloves, twine, scissors, wire, and small pots. This will keep these things organized, accessible, and free from dirt and grime. Consider stackable bins, which will maximize your space.

Utilize the Exterior of the Shed

Utilize the Exterior of the Shed
Treefrog Design

The exterior of your garden shed offers additional space for storage items that would take up room indoors. This space should be reserved for items that you specifically use outdoors and that will not be easily damaged by moisture or sunlight.

Magnetic Strip

Magnetic strips strategically placed can help keep small tools, such as trowels, shears, and scissors, easily accessible. Magnetic strips can be installed on a small wall near work tables, benches, or sinks to provide secure yet visible storage.

Overhead Storage

Overhead Storage
Backyard Buildings

Build shelves in difficult-to-reach areas near the ceiling to make the best use of the available space in the garden shed. This type of storage is ideal for items that you do not need to access frequently. Make sure to use sturdy materials to build the shelves so that they can withstand storing heavy items over time.

Workbench

Workbench
Crose & Lemke Construction

Even if you do not have a dedicated garden shed, you can maximize your gardening space by setting up an old-school style workbench as a staging area for all gardening projects. These benches typically have drawers and shelves for storing gardening supplies, as well as plenty of counter space for potting, planting, and pruning.

Repurposed Furniture

Repurposed Furniture
Art | Harrison Interiors & Collection

Look for old or out-of-date furniture that can help you organize your garden shed. Consider cabinets, tables, shelving units, dressers, bookshelves, stools, and seating, all of which can provide additional storage or comfort in your space. Customize them with a fun paint color or a new stain to enhance their appearance while also protecting them from moisture and humidity.

Drawer Organizers

Drawer organizers are essential for storing small items like nails, plant labels, and wire. Organizers with multiple containers allow for different items to coexist in the same drawer, making it easier to find what you need when you need it.

Add Ample Counter Space

Add Ample Counter Space
Teracottage-Limited Edition Artisan Sheds & Such

Incorporating ample counter space into your garden shed will provide you with the area you need to complete tasks such as potting plants, sorting seeds, and organizing your tools. This platform allows you to spread out and work without feeling cramped. Make the most of your vertical storage to avoid having to store much on your horizontal work area. This will not only keep your workspace cleaner, but it will also maximize the amount of space available for working.

Consider using durable materials for the counter that can withstand dirt, water, and wear while also matching the style of your shed. Many garden sheds use natural materials for their countertops, such as wood and natural stone.

Floor Space

Keeping the floor space as clear as possible is critical to the safety and usability of your garden shed. This lowers the risk of tripping and makes the shed easier to clean and maintain over time. If possible, avoid storing anything directly on the floor. Vertical storage options such as hooks and shelves will allow you to increase the amount of floor space.

Install a Sink

Install a Sink
Pullen Grass Works

Adding a sink to your garden shed can significantly enhance the functionality of your space. A sink will allow you to conveniently wash your hands, water your plants, and rinse fresh produce without having to trek back and forth from your house. This will help keep your space more organized and efficient by containing some of the mess that comes with gardening.

Make it Pretty

Make it Pretty

Transforming your garden shed by making it more attractive with planted flowers, paint, or decorative accessories can make it a more inspiring place to work. Making it a lovely space will mean that you want to spend more time there and ensure that you take better care of it by keeping it cleaner and more organized.

Bring in the Sunlight

Bring in the Sunlight
Backyard Buildings

Maximizing sunlight in your garden shed through windows or skylights will improve visibility and make it easier to keep your space organized. Natural light helps young plants thrive, so increasing the lighting in strategic areas will allow your shed to double as a space for potting small plants or growing delicate seedlings. Sunlight is also an energizing element, which will improve your mood and motivate you to keep the shed organized over time.

Label Everything

Clearly labeling all of your containers, shelves, and drawers will help you find items quickly and stay organized over time because it encourages you to replace items correctly. Consistent labeling also ensures that other people who use the shed will contribute to maintaining the organization that you have worked so hard to achieve.

Use Large Pots to Store Small Items

Use Large Pots to Store Small Items
Theresa Fine

You can repurpose large pots to attractively store small items like seeds, twine, and hand tools. Grouping these items in decorative pots keeps them organized and easily accessible, and it also adds a charming and rustic touch to your garden shed.

Not everyone is comfortable spraying chemical DEET insect repellent on themselves or their family. You can buy natural non-toxic bug spray–usually at a premium price. Or make your own. The advantages of making your own bug repellent include:

  • Experiment to see what works best for you.
  • Pleasant smells.
  • Make as little or as much as you need.
  • Target specific insects.
  • Avoid absorbing and inhaling toxic chemicals and help the environment.

Homemade bug spray

8 DIY Bug Sprays

Most homemade bug sprays use an essential oil as the active ingredient. Bugs use their odorant receptors to locate a host–like humans.

They detect–and are attracted to–scents like carbon dioxide we expel by breathing, sweat, perfume, aftershave, hairspray, colors, and more. Essential oils disrupt the receptors and repel bugs.

Diy natura bug repellent

1. Catnip Oil

Catnip oil contains nepetalactone, a compound 10 times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET. Mix one teaspoon with ¼ cup of olive oil and rub it on exposed skin as required.

2. Lemon Eucalyptus Oil

Lemon Eucalyptus is an effective repellent against mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. Mix 10 drops of the oil with a quarter cup of coconut oil and rub on skin. Or half a cup of witch hazel, half a cup of water, and about 40 drops of oil for spray-on application.

Lemon eucalyptus oil is not safe for children under three years old or pregnant or nursing mothers.

3. Tea Tree Oil

In addition to tea tree oil’s many beneficial uses, it can be used as a bug repellent. Mix a few drops with a quarter cup of vinegar or water and wipe down kitchen and pantry shelves to keep unwanted beetles away. Peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil work almost as well.

4. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil repels–and may kill–mosquitoes, ants, and spiders–and smells good at the same time. Mix about ten drops of oil in a quarter cup of water to use as a spray. You can use more oil if you like, but it is more robust than many other oils and the smell may be a little overpowering.

5. Neem Oil

Neem oil repels mosquitoes and fleas. It can be concocted as a spray or rub. Stir a half teaspoon of oil into a half cup of coconut oil and rub onto exposed skin. To make a spray, mix two tablespoons of oil with a half cup of water and a half cup of witch hazel. Neem doesn’t mix well. You need to shake vigorously before each application.

6. Cinnamon Oil

Mosquitoes are repelled by cinnamon according to a study conducted by the NIH. It can cause skin irritation, so experiment with a few drops of oil in a half cup of water and spray a small area to check your reaction.

7. Lavender Oil

Lavender oil repels mosquitoes, flies, and moths. It is safe to apply topically without diluting. To use as a spray, mix half a cup of water with half a cup of witch hazel and add 20 – 30 drops of oil. Shake well before using.

You can hang lavender-infused sachets close to doors and windows or use the spray on frames to keep pests from entering the house.

8. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar repels mosquitoes and fruit flies. Mix a half cup of vinegar with a half cup of water, shake, and spray on exposed skin. Adding a few drops of essential oil like peppermint covers the pickle smell. Vinegar may sting a bit until it dries.

Most essential oils repel insects. Here are a few more to consider.

  • Citrus Oils. Mosquitoes and possibly flies, fleas, mites, and aphids. Popular outdoor repellent. Can be used as a spray but evaporates quickly. Known to be harmful to pets.
  • Garlic Oil. Ticks. Spray in gardens and yards to suppress tick nymphs. Can be used on skin and clothing but many find the odor offensive.
  • Dill Oil. Cockroaches. Dilute and spray inside the house where roaches appear.
  • Cedarwood Oil. Mosquitoes, ticks, fleas. Dilute and spray on exposed skin.

Pet urine is one of the hardest-to-remove stains and among the most noticeable household smells. Most home remedies and even some store-bought cleaners don’t have the necessary ingredients to eliminate the smell of urine, which may lead you to think your home will be stuck with this scent forever.

Fortunately, there is a solution: enzymatic cleaners.

Pet Urine Stain

What is an Enzymatic Cleaner, and How Does it Eliminate Pet Stains?

Enzymes can break down or build up organic matter. While many types of enzymes exist, the most prevalent in pet odor removers is called protease. Proteases break down protein-based stains, including pet urine, vomit, blood, and feces. Rather than simply masking the pet pee smell, these enzymes feast on the bacteria, eliminating it at the source.

How to Use an Enzymatic Cleaner on Pet Urine and Feces Across the Home

Household enzymatic cleaners are not only effective but also safe to use. They can treat a myriad of surfaces, including carpets, mattresses, pet beds, and even hard floors. They work on most water-safe materials, excluding delicates like silk and velvet.

It’s wise to follow the instructions on the bottle of enzymatic cleaner you’re using for tailored advice. But in general, to use one of these products, you’ll first clean up your pet’s mess. Then, spray the area with the cleaner, ensuring it’s well-saturated. For furniture or upholstered items, place a towel over the cleaner and place a heavy object on top to help wick away some of the moisture. You’ll then wait a specified period to wipe away excess product or wait until the area completely dries.

Our Enzymatic Cleaner Recommendations

One of the best multi-surface cleaners is Rocco & Roxie Stain and Odor Eliminator. The enzymes in this cleaner activate as soon as they detect protein-based stains. It works on hard floors, litter boxes, carpets, furniture, clothing, kennels, and all sleeping areas. It’s a little expensive, but its efficacy makes it worth the price.

To remove pet urine smells from clothing, dog beds, blankets, and other laundry items, we like Nature’s Miracle Enzymatic Laundry Boost. It contains the enzymes necessary to break down the toughest pet stains and works in all types of washing machines.

Even the most organized people struggle with containing cords. They’re hard to keep neat but necessary for just about every important appliance, lamp, and electronic device in the home. If you’re sick of having messy-looking cords on display or aren’t sure how to store them, try some of these clever hacks.

Keep cords organized

Label Cords with Washi Tape or a Label Maker

There’s nothing worse than looking for a cord and guessing which one will work. An easy remedy to this problem is a simple label.

As soon as you bring a new cord into the house, label it. Use washi tape and a permanent marker, or affix a label from your label maker around the cable.

Invest in Cable Sleeves

@lifewithleeanne How I manage cord clutter, using my office as an example. #cordmanagement #organization #homeoffice #homeofficedecor #ikeahack #ikeahackers #diyproject ♬ Little Things – Adrian Berenguer

Cables sleeves look like mesh but are made from heat-resistant material. You can place them over one cord (like your computer cord) to disguise it or purchase large ones that can keep several cords together.

Use Old Toilet Paper Rolls and a Box to Keep them Organized

If you’re sick of your cables tangling, keep the ones you don’t use organized with toilet paper rolls.

Keep all of your empty toilet paper rolls, bundle your cables, and secure them with a twist tie. Then, stand the rolls up in an empty shoe box and insert each cord into a separate roll.

Household charging stations provide an easy way to keep tabs on your most important chargers and prevent them from tangling up. You can buy trays with built-in plug-ins specifically for this purpose or create your own charging station in a drawer, basket, or shelf.

Throw Out What You Don’t Use

If you have a junk drawer in your kitchen, I’m guessing that there’s a heap of tangled cords nestled inside. And if your drawer looks anything like mine did before decluttering, it’s full of unidentified cords you’ve never used.

While it might be a pain, take thirty minutes to figure out where cords go and if you need them. If you aren’t quite sure about some, put them in a zip-lock bag and write a date on it. Revisit the bag in three months. If you haven’t used them within three months, toss them in the garbage.

Bundle Cords in a Clear Box

@apopofyou The better way to organize loose cords ⬇ As a busy mom of three, keeping our home organized is always a challenge, especially when it comes to managing all our messy cords! Doesn’t it feel like EVERYTHING comes with a cord nowadays?? I just completed my second annual New Years purge, but all of those pesky cords were a NON-ISSUE because of a little organization hack I used last year. One of my ultimate mom hacks for organizing cords involves using stretchy, magnetic cord organizers along with a photo storage box. I was getting stressed out by the chaos in our cord bin, but this organization system has been a total game changer! Now, all our cords have their designated spot in the photo storage box, and with everything neatly labeled, there’s no more frantic searching or untangling. It’s been such a relief to finally have all our loose cords in order. In the craziness of a nonstop day with kids, an unorganized home can feel like a time thief for any mom… I’ve been there—frantically searching through drawers, shuffling piles, and searching every nook and cranny for essentials like keys, important papers, or even things like socks or toys for the kids. A disorganized space not only causes frustration but also consumes valuable time that could be devoted to more fulfilling activities. It’s incredible how much time slips away in the chaos of an unorganized home, leaving busy moms feeling overwhelmed and longing for more efficient systems in place. By using this loose cord organization hack, each cord now has its own spot. It’s amazing how much easier it is to locate the right charger or cable when they’re neatly organized and labeled in the box. When everything has its specific place to call home, the stress of finding items literally disappears. Also, have you seen my Sharpie labeling hack? It’s one of my best kept secrets too! #fyp #foryou #phonechargers #messydrawer #organization #photoboxes #labeling #amazonfinds #homeorganization ♬ Best Time – Infraction Music

Clear plastic shoe boxes are wonderful cord containers. They allow you to see what you have stored and provide space for longer cables.

For the cheapest organization route, label your cords, wrap them up, and then neatly place them in the box. Or, for even more organization, purchase cord containers and arrange them in your clear box with the label facing up.

Disguise Cords in the Living Room with a Cord Cover

A lot of cords running down the wall can kill a room’s appearance. An easy remedy for this is a cord cover. You can purchase inexpensive cord covers from Amazon for less than $20. Simply use the included adhesive strips to attach the cord cover strip to the wall, insert your cords, and pop on the cover.

Install Cord Wrappers on Small Appliances

Appliances with cord wraps are easier to store, but unfortunately, not all small appliances or vacuums come with them. If you’re sick of managing cables while putting away appliances from the counter, you need cord wraps.

For less than $20, you can invest in a pack of cord wrappers like these from 3M. They stick to any appliance and are heat resistant.

When you think of pool noodles, you probably think of fun in the sun, but these toys have many uses outside the water. If you’re looking for inexpensive hacks to transform your home or make your life a little easier, pool noodles are a low-cost and practical option.

Pool noodles hack

Pool noodles are made of polyethylene, a lightweight and durable closed-cell plastic foam with a spongy texture. Polyethylene is also water resistant and able to float. While this material isn’t recyclable, you can use one of the hacks below to keep pool noodles out of the dump.

Keep Your Curtains Evenly Spaced Out

@simplykatielynn Pool noodles = curtain hack #curtains #homehack #home #diyhome #hometips #diyproject #homediy #howto #beforeandafter #poolnoodle ♬ Coffee Talk (Extended) – BLVKSHP

Give your curtains a full, evenly spaced look by sticking pool noodles between the grommets. Cut down a pool noodle to fit the fabric that stretches between each grommet. Then slit the noodle lengthwise down the middle and fit the pool noodle over the curtain rod. The result is a more put-together look that’s effortless to maintain.

Create an Elegant Wreath for Your Front Door

Wreaths can be pricey, but not when you DIY using a pool noodle. Start by using one or two pool noodles, depending on the size you want. Then, add wire, such as a metal curtain hanger, inside the noodle for an extra hold.

Tape the ends together using duct tape or packing tape. Then, hot glue burlap or other types of material around the noodle. Attach decorative items such as flowers and bows for the finishing touch.

Fishing Rod Organizer

Are you tired of untangling your fishing rods? If so, use a pool noodle to create storage. Here’s what to do: find a secure location in your home to store all your rods. Then, cut slits into a pool noodle to hold your rods, spacing them as you desire. Attach the pool noodle to the wall.

Using wood or a 3-inch PVC pipe, create holes with a router to set the bottom of the poles in for an extra secure hold. Secure the pipe or wood to the wall using screws. The fishing rod organizer can store up to 10 fishing rods.

Baby Bumpers

Combat sharp edges around the home with the baby bumper pool noodle hack. Cut a pool noodle down to size and then create a slit in the noodle and place it on the edges of your furniture. To get extra fancy, paint the pool noodle or hot glue fabric to match your decor.

Boot Storage

@ashmariesavage DIY Spring Wreath this pool noodle wreath was so much fun to make! I got all of my florals from Michaels for around a dollar. Nothing is more frustrating than having a crease line in your boot. To prevent this, cut pool noodles 1-2 inches higher than your boots. Then, place the noodles inside each boot. If your boots are out in the open, you can hot glue cloth onto the pool noodle and add a bow at the top for a finished look.

Paintbrush Holder

Painting can be messy, which is why every home with an artist needs a paintbrush holder. Using a square bowl, cut a pool noodle to the desired length. Then, cut a horizontal slit in the noodle to place over the bowl. Finally, cut vertical slits on the noodle to hold the paintbrushes.

Trampoline Springs Cover

Trampoline springs are dangerous if a body part gets caught in one. To prevent injuries, cut a pool noodle the same size as the springs and then cut a slit in the noodle. Slide each noodle over the springs. Use alternating colors to create a happy atmosphere for added fun.

Noodle Hose

Use a pool noodle to fill a bucket that won’t fit in your sink. Attach one side of the noodle to the faucet and place the other in the bucket. Turn the water on while holding onto the noodle to fill your bucket without making a mess.

Under Door Draft Stopper

Tall planters are a staple for any home, but filling them can be expensive and heavy. To eliminate this, use old pool noodles as a pot filler. Use one noodle at a time, creating overlapping circles in the bottom of the pot. Continue this process until the noodles reach the desired height. Fill the planters with soil or rocks. Lastly, place your plant inside the planter.

Water Sprinkler

Paint the noodles to match your decor, and insert a battery-operated light candle into each noodle.

Bed Frame Protector

Protect yourself from a stubbed toe by padding your bed frame with a pool noodle. To do this, cut a pool noodle to the size of your bed frame leg. Then, cut a horizontal slit down the noodle. Place on the legs of your bed frame. Your toes will be sure to thank you later.

Card Holder Pool Noodle Hack

The cardholder pool noodle hack is perfect for any card player, young or old. Start by cutting a pool noodle to about one inch thick. Then, cut a small slit down the middle of the noodle horizontally and place your cards inside the slit. Now you have an easy and cheap card holder.

If you’ve considered slathering your walls in limewash for added visual interest and texture, you’re not alone. Although this trend has recently gained popularity, it dates back thousands of years.

“Limewash is not new – it’s actually one of the oldest paints known to man, dating back to the Egyptian Pharaohs,” said Hanin Smith,  Principal Designer and Owner of HIDE Studio Interiors based in San Diego. “It’s made of natural minerals and because it has a high PH, it was used as a protective coating that is water-resistant and has antifungal properties, so it is highly durable and functional.”

Smith also adds that limewash can give the wall a chalky, earthy look that complements today’s modern organic style.

Limewash process

What’s in Limewash?

Limewash is textured paint composed of water, crushed limestone, and natural pigments. “One of the main appeals of limewash is its environmentally friendly and health-conscious properties,” said Alex Barrantes of Alex Painting Services in Montclair, New Jersey. “It has low to no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it safe for use in interior spaces, particularly in areas like nurseries or bedrooms. Additionally, limewash has antimicrobial qualities that can help prevent mold and rust, as well as regulate humidity.”

How to Apply Limewash

@oliviawattershome Replying to @user727933102711 Here is what my limewash paint looks like in different lights! #limewash #limewashpaint #diyproject #homedecor #interiordesign #organicmoderndecor #organicmodern #homediy ♬ I Think I Like When It Rains – WILLIS

Limewash is an inexpensive project that you can do yourself. To make sure you get it right, we interviewed painters and interior designers for their best tips on using limewash.

Do – Apply to Clean Porous Surfaces and Prime Previously Painted Surfaces

Limewash can be applied to porous surfaces, including drywall, brick, cement, and stucco. However, surfaces need to be cleaned and free from grease before application.

If the area you’re limewashing has been previously painted, use a water-based acrylic primer before adding limewash.

Don’t – Add Water Directly to the Limewash

Mixing limewash with water can lighten the look. However, it’s easy to get heavy-handed and add too much water, ruining your paint. Instead, keep a bucket of water beside you and dip your paintbrush in the water and then in limewash.

Do – Apply Several Thin Coats

Thick coats of limewash will dry to a chalky mess that can flake off. New limewash applications require four coats with 24 drying times in between each coat. You must dampen the area you’re painting before adding a layer of limewash. Use a flat brush or large masonry brush for the best results.

According to Barrantes, limewashing is not a job to rush through. It can be labor intensive and will take several days to complete as you wait for each coat to completely dry.

Don’t – Use Regular Brush Strokes

One key element to achieving the classic limewash look lies in the brush stroke. The most common brushstroke application is an “X,” although there are more you can choose from. Other options include vertical, horizontal, or random. Research before you start to ensure you achieve the pattern you’re after.

Do – Fully Coat a Room Before Taking a Break

Limwash dries quickly and splotchy, especially the first couple of coats. Don’t start limewashing a room unless you have time to equally coat the walls before taking a break to let it dry. Working on half of a room and finishing the other half later may lead to an uneven-looking finish.

Don’t – Apply Limewash to Humid Rooms

Limewash and excess humidity don’t mix. While you can add a sealant to protect the limewash, it may detract from its organic feel. Because of this, consider avoiding limewash in kitchens, bathrooms, and other spaces with excess moisture or high humidity levels.

Plumbers use plumbers putty and silicone sealant to prevent leaking, finish around sinks and tubs, faucets, and drains. They are interchangeable for some applications but not others. Here is what DIYers should know.

Putty or silicone for plumbers

What is Plumbers Putty?

Plumbers putty is made from powdered clay and linseed oil. It may also contain fish oil, talc, limestone, and occasionally epoxy sealants. It is easy to mold and shape as required and can be removed and reapplied–even after years of service. It never hardens.

Plumbers putty is somewhat like gasket material. It has poor adhesion to materials but when clamped between two solid surfaces, it prevents water leakage. It is most often used when assembling drains in sinks, showers, and tubs. Some people use it to seal toilets to drain flanges, but most plumbers recommend against the practice.

Plumbers putty cannot be used to seal cracks that leak. It should not be used on ABS or other plastics because a chemical reaction can lead to product failure.

Benefits:

Every plumber carries plumbers putty for certain applications.

  • Easily Shaped. Easily molds and conforms to any required shape.
  • Easy To Apply. Apply to one of the two parts being fitted together. Tighten the parts. Excess putty will squeeze out. Cut off excess and return to the container.
  • Removable. If it is not applied properly, it can be removed and reapplied. Even after years in place, plumbers putty comes off easily–and can still be reused.
  • Durable. Prevents leaking for 50 years if undisturbed.
  • Remains Soft. Never hardens. Makes disassembling pieces easier.
  • Non-toxic. Contains no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).
  • Inexpensive. Approximately $10.00 for 5 pounds. Probably a lifetime supply for a DIYer.

Disadvantages:

As versatile as it is, plumbers putty is not right for certain applications.

  • Repairs. Does not hold broken pieces together or repair cracks.
  • Small Surfaces. Ideal for small surfaces like drain flanges. Not ideal for large surfaces.
  • Not Sticky. Does not adhere well. Parts must be attached mechanically after the application of putty.
  • Exposure. Dries out if exposed for long periods.
  • Pipes. Cannot be used on threaded pipes as a replacement for Teflon tape.
  • ABS. Cannot be used on ABS or plastic.

Where To Use Plumbers Putty

The most common applications for plumbers putty include:

  • Sealing sink and tub drains during installation.
  • Faucets to sinks.
  • Sink fixtures.
  • Drain baskets.

What is Silicone Sealant?

Silicone sealant is a silicone-based product that has multiple uses–sealing plumbing fixtures, window and door frames, holes, leaks, etc. Different additives change the chemical properties to achieve products for multiple uses.

Silicone is used to seal all types of plumbing–sinks to countertops, backsplashes, faucets to tub-surrounds and sinks, and drains in tubs and sinks. It adheres to the material and turns hard. Some silicone sealant is paintable.

Plumber silicone

Once applied, silicone is impossible to reposition without completely removing it. It does not peel off easily–often requiring scraping and paint thinner to clean the area before re-caulking. Silicone can be used to seal small holes and cracks in non-pressurized water pipes.

Benefits:

Silicone is more versatile than plumbers putty but future repairs are usually more difficult.

  • Versatile. Useful for many more applications than plumbers putty.
  • Waterproof. Creates a durable waterproof seal. Substrates must be clean and dry.
  • Does Not Crack. Expands and contracts to accommodate different rates of movement of various materials and maintains seal.
  • Adhesive. Can be used to hold materials together.
  • Compatible. Compatible with most materials.
  • Inexpensive. Approximately $10.00 per 10-ounce tube.
  • Colored. Available in over 20 colors.

Disadvantages:

Many people unfamiliar with using silicone swear at it–not by it. Silicone is applied with a caulking gun or from a tube–like toothpaste.

  • Messy. Application can be messy and inconsistent for the inexperienced. Trying to repair it before it skins over usually makes the mess worse.
  • Hard to Remove. Removing old silicone requires cutting and scraping. May cause damage to countertops, sinks, tubs, and fixtures.
  • Lifespan. 10 – 20 years.
  • Painting. Some silicone sealants cannot be painted. Make sure you know what you are buying.
  • Storage. Difficult to store long-term because any air infiltration hardens left-over product in the tube.
  • Odors. Most silicone sealant has a chemical/vinegar-type of odor for about three days as it cures. It can be toxic to some people.

Where To Use Silicone Sealant

The most common applications for silicone sealant include:

  • Where you need very good long-term waterproofing.
  • Where sealant is visible.
  • On porous surfaces.
  • On non-plumbing projects like windows, doors, crack-sealing, and as an adhesive.

When you don’t have a saw or need lumber cut down so that it fits in your vehicle, turn to The Home Depot. Nearly all Home Depot stores will cut wood for you, but rates vary from location to location. It’s also important to note that they will only cut wood you buy from them. You cannot bring in your own wood for cuts.

Home Depot Cutting Wood

Where to Get Wood Cut at the Home Depot?

You’ll find a large saw in the lumber section at almost every Home Depot location — this is for an associate to cut lumber for customers. While there may not always be associates readily available in the lumber department, you can always seek an employee to assist with cutting your lumber.

Home Depot will cut any wood you purchase from them as long as it safely fits into the saw. However, they can only perform straight cuts and cannot do small or intricate cuts.

How Much Does it Cost to Get Wood Cut at Home Depot?

Every Home Depot sets its own policies for wood cutting. Most offer the first five cuts for free and then charge a small amount, ranging from $0.25 to $1 per cut afterward. Some stores will offer a larger number of free cuts. For accurate information, call your local store ahead of time.

Are Cuts By the Home Depot Accurate?

You can’t count on accuracy when getting your wood cut from Home Depot. The sharpness or dullness of the blade, the accuracy of measurements, and the experience of the person cutting can affect the outcome.

If you have a saw at home and just need wood cut down to fit into your vehicle, consider adding an inch to your cut requests as a safety margin.
